In the heart of the Medina, behind walls that reveal nothing from the outside, lies a place most visitors walk past without ever knowing it exists.

Le Jardin Secret — The Secret Garden — a name that describes it perfectly.

What Is Le Jardin Secret?

A historic garden tucked inside the old Medina of Marrakech, bringing together two completely different worlds within the same walls. I walked in with no particular expectations — and walked out with a view that’s still with me.

The garden is divided into two distinct sections:

🌍 The Exotic Garden — First Section
Plants and trees gathered from around the world, arranged in a carefully designed space. Each plant has its story, every corner is intentional. Smaller in size but incredibly rich and visually dense.

🌿 The Islamic Garden — Second Section
Larger in size, filled with local trees and plants arranged in the traditional Islamic garden style. Calm, shaded, and genuinely restful.

🏠 The Rooftop
Overlooks both gardens completely and gives you a beautiful panoramic view — included with your entry ticket at no extra cost.

There’s an optional add-on for 40 MAD extra: the watchtower.

And I’ll tell you honestly — those 40 MAD are the best money you’ll spend in Marrakech.

From the top you get:

The High Atlas Mountains with their snow-capped peaks filling the horizon

The Small Atlas completing the picture from the other side

The entire Medina spread out beneath your feet

An exceptional view in every sense of the word. Do not enter this garden and skip the tower.

Pricing & Tickets

Entry: 100 MAD
Tower: +40 MAD extra ← Don’t skip it

What your ticket includes:

Full all-day access to both gardens and the rooftop

Ticket is valid for a full year from the date of purchase

Can be redeemed anytime during that year

Tickets are non-exchangeable and non-refundable

All exits are final

How Much Time Do You Need?

I spent about one hour inside — enough to explore everything at a comfortable pace.

But the best part? Since the ticket is valid for a full year, you can come back whenever you want without paying again. That alone makes the price completely justified.

Who Is This For?

Nature & plant lovers — you’ll find things here you won’t find anywhere else in Marrakech

Families — I saw families genuinely enjoying every corner of the place

Photography lovers — every angle is a ready shot, especially from the tower

If you’re looking for a place that blends nature, art, and peace — just 45 minutes from Marrakech — Anima Garden is the destination you haven’t heard enough about.

I walked through it once, then twice, then a third time — not because I got lost, but because every single loop revealed something I had completely missed before.

What Is Anima Garden?

Anima is not a garden in the traditional sense. It’s a creative project founded by Austrian artist André Heller — a man who sees the world through an entirely different lens.

Every corner carries his signature: rare plants and towering trees, hand-painted tree trunks, hanging talismans, stones carefully arranged around each tree like a small shrine, and art sculptures scattered throughout.

Even the trash bins are designed with intention.

That’s the level of detail we’re talking about.

The garden is large enough that you never feel crowded, and quiet enough that you feel like you have it all to yourself.

Here’s what to expect:

Extraordinary botanical variety — trees and plants from across the globe in one place

Art sculptures placed between pathways and green islands

Paintings and patterns drawn directly onto tree trunks

Hanging talismans and spiritual elements woven between the branches

André Heller’s personal corner — the highlight of the entire visit for me

A café and restaurant inside the garden if you want to slow down and relax

If you’re in Marrakech and haven’t visited Anima, you’ve genuinely missed one of the most unique experiences the region has to offer.

You are standing on a rooftop in Marrakech, scrolling through GetYourGuide, and you see it. Hot air balloon over the Atlas Mountains. Berber breakfast. Flight certificate. 4.8 stars from over 9,000 reviews.

For around 1,000 MAD, it sounds like the kind of morning you book once and talk about for years.

I booked it. I went. And here is the honest version — the parts that were genuinely breathtaking, the parts that were simpler than advertised, and the one detail the description keeps mentioning that simply did not show up.

If you are thinking about adding this to your Marrakech itinerary, read this first. Not because it is bad — it is far from bad — but because knowing exactly what to expect will make the experience even better.

Hotel Pickup: Early Morning, Good Communication

The tour description says they contact you the day before around 6–7 PM to confirm your pickup time and location.

In my experience, this worked as promised — a WhatsApp message arrived the evening before with the confirmed time and meeting point.

Pickup was early morning, which is standard for balloon flights. The balloon needs to take off at sunrise when wind conditions are calmest and the light is most spectacular.

If you are not a morning person, prepare yourself the night before.

The vehicle was comfortable and the drive to the launch site took about 45 minutes to an hour from Marrakech city center.

The balloon flight itself lasted around 40 minutes — and this part delivered completely.

You drift over the rocky valleys and desert hills surrounding Marrakech, with the Atlas Mountains filling the horizon.

The silence is what strikes you first. No engine noise, no vibration — just the occasional burst of the burner and the sound of the wind.

The views are genuinely spectacular. Green valleys after a rainy spring, Berber villages dotting the hillsides, the Atlas peaks catching the early morning light.

This is not something you can recreate with a photograph — you have to be there.

Our pilot was professional, attentive, and made sure everyone rotated to get their best photos.

The team follows the balloon by vehicle on the ground and meets you at the landing point. The landing itself was smooth and controlled.

The Flight Certificate: A Small But Meaningful Touch

After landing, you receive a commemorative flight certificate — in Arabic calligraphy, with your name and the date of your flight.

It is a simple gesture, but it works. It makes the experience feel like something officially marked, not just another activity. Worth keeping.

The Berber Breakfast: Real, Generous, and Served in a Tent

After the flight, you are taken to a Berber tent for breakfast. This part matched the description well.

The spread included cornbread, pancakes, batbot, harcha, msemen, olives, honey, and Moroccan mint tea.

Simple, generous, and authentic. After an early morning and 40 minutes in the sky, it felt exactly right.

However: the description also mentions fresh fruit. During my visit, fresh fruit was not part of the breakfast. Everything else was present and good, but this detail was missing.

The atmosphere in the tent — overlooking the mountains, the quiet after the flight, the warm tea — made this a genuinely lovely ending to the morning.

My Quick Tips Before You Book

Bring a warm layer — it is cold at altitude even in spring, especially at sunrise.

Leave your backpack in the van — there is limited foot room in the basket.

Don’t expect hot chocolate or fresh fruit — go for the flight, not the food.

Book a morning slot — this is the only option anyway, and the light is worth it.

Bring a small camera or use your phone — the pilot will help you get good shots.

The drive is part of the experience — use it to wake up and enjoy the landscape.

Check the weather — the tour can be modified on the day for safety.

Is This Tour Worth It?

Yes, if:

You want one of the most memorable mornings you can have in Marrakech.

You are comfortable with early starts and a long half-day commitment.

You want views of the Atlas Mountains that no road trip can replicate.

You are a beginner — no experience needed, pilots are professional and reassuring.

No, if:

You expect every detail of the description to be exactly as written.

You are very sensitive to heights or enclosed spaces.

You want a late-morning or afternoon activity.

Overall, there is real value for the price. The 40-minute flight over the Atlas Mountains is something genuinely difficult to describe — you have to experience it.

The Berber breakfast and the certificate add a nice cultural touch at the end.

Just go in knowing that the pre-flight spread is simpler than advertised, and you will have a genuinely extraordinary morning.

Every tour description sounds perfect on paper. Paragliding over the Atlas Mountains, a traditional Berber breakfast, camel ride in Agafay Desert, mint tea in a Berber tent. Sounds like a complete dream day from Marrakech for around $80.

I did this exact tour. And here is what actually happened — including the parts that matched perfectly, the parts that surprised me, and the parts that were simply not there.

If you are thinking about booking this experience, read this first. Not to scare you away, but to help you go in with the right expectations — because the parts that delivered, delivered well.

Hotel Pickup: Where It Started Differently Than Expected

To contact the day before we specified pickup is 11:00 AM. In my case, there was a coordination delay because I was returning from another activity. What made the difference was Sofiane.

Sofiane was extremely kind. He waited for me for some time and coordinated with my driver for a long time until I returned.

He did not just wait — he also used that time to give me valuable tips about my upcoming trip to Merzouga: where to find the best camps, how to prepare for the cold desert nights after sunset, and what to expect on the road south of Marrakech.

That kind of genuine care before the tour even started set the tone for everything that followed.

The Drive Through the Atlas: Villages, Green Valleys, and a Stop Worth Making

The drive itself through the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains is already part of the experience.

You pass through Berber villages, see the landscape shift from the city noise to something quieter and older, and start to understand why people come all the way from Marrakech for this.

We stopped at a women’s cooperative along the way. They have natural health products — argan oils, dried herbs, handmade soaps — and the prices felt honest compared to what you find in the medina.

But what I will never forget is the tea with five herbs. I don’t know exactly what was in it, but the taste was warm, layered, and completely unlike standard mint tea. If you do this tour, do not skip this stop.

The takeoff is from Kik Plateau, one of the best paragliding sites near Marrakech, sitting above the Lalla Takerkoust lake and the green rolling valleys below.

After a full safety briefing, you fly tandem with a certified instructor for around 20 minutes. No experience needed.

The views are genuinely spectacular — the lake shimmering below, the villages dotting the hillsides, the Atlas stretching in every direction.

But here is my honest moment: I felt dizzy during the flight.

As for the guide Abdelilah, he was quick to respond. When I told him about the dizziness in the sky, he immediately gave me advice and told me this is normal, then landed me quickly and kept checking on my condition throughout.

He never made me feel embarrassed. He treated my comfort as a priority and stayed attentive until I was fully okay.

And later, I found out I was not alone in this. Abdelilah told me that 2 out of every 10 passengers either feel dizzy or actually get sick mid-flight — some right there in the sky.

He even gave me a practical tip I will never forget: if you feel it coming, lean to the left side so you don’t ruin your own clothes. That small detail made me feel much better about my dizzy moment.

He is a wonderful guide. That response — calm, fast, professional — is exactly what you want from someone you are strapped to at altitude.

The tour includes a GoPro video of your flight. Mine captured the dizzy moment and the landing perfectly. Worth having.

40 Minutes of Silence: My Honest Experience Above Marrakech in a Hot Air Balloon

Camel Ride: 15 Minutes Near the Atlas Takeoff Point

After landing, we stayed in the Atlas Mountains area near the takeoff point — not in Agafay Desert as the tour description mentions.

The description says 20 minutes with a traditional Bedouin outfit. In reality, the ride was about 15 minutes, and no traditional outfit was provided during my visit.

It is calm, slow, and gives you genuinely beautiful photo opportunities. The mountain light and green valley backdrop made it scenic regardless.

This part was simple but honest — just know that the duration and outfit may differ from what is advertised, so adjust your expectations before booking.

The Mint Tea in the Berber Tent: I Have to Be Honest Here

The description mentions finishing the day with mint tea in a Berber tent overlooking the desert.

This did not happen during my visit.

I’m mentioning this not to criticize, but because I think travelers deserve to know the difference between what is written and what is delivered.

Everything else in the tour matched the description well — but this final touch, which sounds like a lovely ending, was not part of my experience.

If it matters to you, ask before booking whether this is included on your specific tour date.

My Quick Tips Before You Book

Bring motion sickness tablets — dizziness mid-flight is common and normal.

Ask specifically about the Berber tent tea — confirm it is included on your day.

Book morning slots when wind conditions over Kik Plateau are most stable.

Dress in layers — the Atlas altitude is cooler than Marrakech city even in spring.

The GoPro video is included — you don’t need to bring your own camera.

Don’t skip the women’s cooperative stop — the five-herb tea alone is worth it.

Is This Tour Worth It?

Yes, if:

You want paragliding, a cultural breakfast, and a desert activity in one day from Marrakech.

You are a beginner — the guides are professional and patient.

You want a team you can trust (Sofiane + Abdelilah made this tour).

No, if:

You expect every detail in the description to be guaranteed.

You are very sensitive to motion at altitude.

You want a longer flight or a fully private experience.

Overall, there is real value for the price. The Atlas views, the Berber breakfast, the camel ride in Agafay — these delivered. Sofiane’s care and Abdelilah’s professionalism made the difference.

Just go in with realistic expectations, ask about the tent tea before you book, and you will have a genuinely good day.

Ever seen those $70 3-day Merzouga tours on GetYourGuide and thought, “This can’t be real”? I did too. So I booked one — the cheapest option I could find — and took the trip myself.

Spoiler: It was not what I expected.

I’d heard the stories, seen the reviews, and wanted to find out for myself what actually happens when you choose the cheapest option on the market.

This is my honest account — the long mountain roads, the beautiful moments, the frustrating ones, the camel ride, and the sleepless night in a windstorm. No polished highlight reel. Just what I’d tell a friend before they hit “Book Now.”

The $70 Trap? A Frustrating Start from Marrakech

The first day of my 3-day trip to Merzouga started badly, and I want to be honest about that from the beginning.

My driver was late, did not contact me before the trip, and left me waiting from 7:35 to 8:20 before I had to contact support myself. As I told you in an article “The Hidden Cost of “Cheap Tours”: Daily Victims of GetYourGuide Listings in Marrakech” a few days before this trip.

They eventually sent another driver, but the beginning was frustrating, and it confirmed my suspicion that very cheap tours on platforms like GetYourGuide can come with weak service and low reliability.

I booked this option because it was the cheapest one I found, around $70, but I do not recommend expecting a luxury experience.

This was a basic trip, not a comfort-focused one, and travelers should understand that before booking.

If your priority is service quality, clear communication, and comfort, this is probably not the best choice.

We left Marrakech and headed toward Tizi n’Tichka, the winding mountain pass that connects Marrakech to the south and makes this road trip feel dramatic from the very first kilometers.

I had been waiting for this part of the journey, because once you leave Marrakech, the landscape starts changing and you finally feel that you are on the way to something bigger.

The road itself is very curvy, and if you get motion sickness like I do, you should be careful.

In my case, I felt dizzy and even a bit nauseous, and I could feel how tiring that road can be for sensitive travelers. The only positive side was that we stopped about every half hour, which helped me breathe fresh air and recover a little.

What made the drive worthwhile was the scenery. The spring landscapes in the High Atlas were beautiful, and the views around Tizi n’Tichka gave the trip a real sense of adventure.

This is one of those routes where the journey itself is part of the experience, even if it is physically tiring.

UNESCO Beauty vs. Tourist Overpricing: The Ait Ben Haddou Reality

At midday, we reached a restaurant where nearly all the tourists from that day were gathered together.

In my opinion, this is because these cheap tours often arrange large group lunches in one place, which probably helps the agency and driver earn commission from the restaurant and balance the very low price of the trip.

I ordered a medium Margherita pizza for 100 MAD, while I can eat something similar in Casablanca for only 18 MAD, and that difference really says a lot.

After lunch, we continued to Aït Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most famous UNESCO-listed ksars and a place known for its earthen architecture and historic atmosphere.

We took a guided walk through the site for 20 MAD, and although the visit was short, the place itself was beautiful.

The spring earth tones and dusty paths reminded me of my childhood in the countryside, and I took some lovely photos there.

Later, we continued toward Tinghir, passing through the long road that leads deeper into southern Morocco.

The drive was still heavy and long, and by the time we arrived at around 8:30 PM, I was tired but relieved to finally reach the hotel.

The hotel was simple, but it was clean enough for the night, and after a shower I finally sat down to write this part before moving on to the second day

Sandboarding, Camels, and Desert Storms: What They Don’t Tell You About Merzouga

In the second day of my trip to Merzouga, we started near Todgha Gorges. We walked a bit through the village before entering the gorges.

The local guide was really cheerful and gave everyone funny local nicknames — he was a great guy, even if he sometimes went a bit too far with me.

After that, we visited a local rugs workshop with high-quality handmade rugs. They export them to countries around the world, but the prices are expensive (between $100-1000 at least), still cheaper than Etsy.

Support local crafts, guys! Then we visited Todgha Gorges — they are gigantic, and you feel small in front of them.

They are truly impressive. I took personal videos and photos that you can find on my Instagram account. After that, we headed to Merzouga and arrived around 6:00 PM.

We left our luggage at the minibus and took only what we needed.

Advice: bring warm clothes because the desert gets extremely cold after sunset until sunrise.

We rode camels (others chose quad bikes), and after about 25 minutes we reached the camp. They welcomed us with tea, then I tried sandboarding — it was hilarious, but everyone kept falling in the sand!

We watched the beautiful sunset, then enjoyed a Berber music and drumming evening under the moonlight.

After that, we went to sleep… but here was the disaster of this trip (and what made many tourists unhappy, including me): strong winds hitting the tent all night, making a very loud noise.

If you are a light sleeper, it might keep you awake, especially knowing you have a full day of driving on day 3.

Good and bad points

What I liked

The spring landscapes through Tizi n’Tichka were beautiful.

Aït Ben Haddou was worth the stop and the guided visit.

The regular breaks helped me recover from the road sickness.

What I did not like

The driver’s delay and lack of communication at the beginning.

The restaurant prices felt clearly inflated.

The trip was cheap, but the quality matched the price — no more, no less.

Strong winds and cold air caused the tents to make loud, constant noises all night, making it very difficult to sleep.

Basic facilities were disappointing: many toilets had no locks, and toilet paper was almost never provided (or was taken away immediately if it was).

My honest advice

If you are sensitive to winding roads, do not underestimate the Marrakech to Tinghir drive.

Bring water, keep motion-sickness tablets if you need them, and be mentally ready for a long day in the car.

And if you expect a luxury tour, this is not the right type of booking.

But if you are okay with a modest budget trip and want to see the road to Merzouga in a relatively affordable way, then the route itself still has real value — especially because Aït Ben Haddou and the Atlas scenery are genuinely impressive.

Renting a car in Marrakech sounds simple until you discover how much money many companies want to block on your card as a deposit.

As someone who lives in Morocco and has rented cars here many times, I wanted to share my honest, first-hand experience using Discover Cars in Marrakech.

My goal was simple: find the cheapest rent a car in Marrakech without deposit, or at least with the lowest possible security hold.

Many rental companies at Marrakech airport ask for a deposit of 600–1,200 euros or more. For budget travelers, that can be a serious problem, especially if you do not want a large amount frozen on your card for days or weeks.

So before my last trip, I started searching for a rental option that was affordable, transparent, and more flexible than the big international brands. That is how I ended up trying Discover Cars.

This article is my step-by-step personal experience with Discover Cars in Marrakech, from the first search to the final return of the vehicle.

Why I Looked for a No-Deposit Car in Marrakech

Before this trip, I had already rented cars from major brands at Marrakech airport. Each time, the price looked fine online, but the real issue came at the counter: a large deposit that had to be blocked on my card.

Sometimes the deposit was bigger than the rental itself.

This time, I had three priorities:

I did not want a large amount frozen on my card.

I wanted a clear final price with no surprises.

I wanted to avoid unnecessary stress at pickup and return.

That is why I started searching for car rental in Marrakech without deposit and kept seeing Discover Cars as a comparison platform that works with local and international suppliers.

Why I Chose Discover Cars

What convinced me to try Discover Cars was the way the platform presented the options.

When you search for Marrakech, you can compare many car rental deals in one place instead of checking each company separately.

The platform also shows the rental conditions, deposit information, and supplier reviews before you book.

That transparency mattered to me. I did not want to arrive at the airport and discover hidden conditions after I had already committed.

Compared with a big brand desk, I felt I had more control because I could compare the deposit, insurance, and price before making a decision.

Book Your car from 9€

Step 1: Searching for the Cheapest Option

I started by entering:

Country: Morocco

City: Marrakech

Dates: my exact travel dates

Then I sorted the results by price and looked for the lowest deposit options.

At this stage, I focused on three things:

Daily price and total rental cost.

Security deposit amount.

Supplier rating and recent reviews.

I found several economy cars, mostly small models like Dacia or Renault, which are ideal for driving in and around Marrakech.

Discover Cars also listed offers from different suppliers, so I could compare them side by side.

Step 2: Reading the Rental Conditions

Before booking, I opened several offers and read the conditions carefully.

This is the part many travelers skip, but it is one of the most important steps. The headline price alone is not enough. You need to check:

Whether the deposit is truly low or if it is only low on paper.

What insurance is included.

Whether mileage is limited.

What the fuel policy is.

Whether the car must be returned with a full tank.

I also looked at the supplier reviews to see whether other travelers had problems with surprise charges, communication, or pickup delays.

In my case, I chose a local supplier with clear conditions and a good reputation in the reviews.

Step 3: Booking the Car

The booking process was straightforward.

I selected the car, entered my details, and paid a small amount online to confirm the reservation. The rest was paid at pickup according to the supplier’s conditions.

What I appreciated most was that the booking summary clearly showed the main conditions before checkout. That made me feel more confident and prepared.

After booking, I received a confirmation email with the voucher, the supplier details, and the pickup instructions.

Step 4: Pickup in Marrakech

On the pickup day, I contacted the rental agent and confirmed the meeting point.

The experience was simple and professional:

The agent arrived on time.

We checked the car together.

I took photos and a short video of the vehicle from all sides.

We reviewed the fuel level and the condition of the car.

This is a step I strongly recommend to every traveler. Even if the supplier is friendly, it is always wise to document the car’s condition before driving away.

The pickup itself was smooth, and there was no pressure to buy unnecessary extras.

Step 5: Driving Around Marrakech

I used the car for city driving and a few short trips outside Marrakech.

The car was not luxury, but it was clean, practical, and good enough for the roads and daily use. For a budget traveler, that is exactly what matters.

Having my own car made the trip easier because I could move on my own schedule and avoid depending on taxis or tours for every small transfer.

The best part was psychological: I was not worried about a huge deposit being blocked or about every tiny scratch turning into a problem later.

Step 6: Returning the Car

The return was the real test, and fortunately it went well.

We met at the agreed location, inspected the car together, and checked the fuel level. Because I had followed the conditions properly, there was no argument and no surprise fee.

The process took only a few minutes, and that made the whole experience feel simple and stress-free.

For me, that is one of the biggest signs of a good rental experience: a smooth return with no drama.

What I Liked and Did Not Like

Tips for Travelers

If you want to find the cheapest rent a car in Marrakech without deposit, here are my practical tips:

Use the deposit filter before anything else.

Sort by price, then compare the conditions.

Read recent reviews from other travelers.

Take photos and video at pickup.

Check the fuel policy and mileage limit.

Book early, especially in high season.

These small steps can save you money, time, and stress.

Is Discover Cars Worth It?

For me, Discover Cars was a useful platform because it helped me compare suppliers and find a more affordable option without the stress of a huge blocked deposit.

It is not magic, and it does not remove the need to read the terms carefully. But if you are traveling to Marrakech and want a practical way to compare deals, it is definitely worth checking.

If your goal is to travel cheaply, stay flexible, and avoid the typical airport counter pressure, then Discover Cars can be a good option.

In recent years, online booking platforms have transformed how tourists plan their trips to Marrakech. At the click of a button, visitors can reserve excursions, transfers, and city tours without ever speaking to a licensed local operator.

But behind the glossy photos and five-star reviews lies a darker reality: dozens of tourists fall victim every single day to illegal operators hiding behind fake companies on major platforms such as GetYourGuide.

This is not a theoretical risk or a rare exception. It is a systemic problem that directly harms tourists, honest professionals, and the reputation of Marrakech as a safe and well-organized destination.

Fake Companies Behind Popular Listings

The incident shown in the referenced video is not an isolated case. According to professionals on the ground, the experience resulted from a booking made with a person registered on GetYourGuide under a fake company name. This pattern is repeated across many of the platform’s top sellers in Marrakech.

These individuals:

Operate without any official license as transport providers or travel agencies.

“Borrow” or invent brand names that sound professional but have no legal existence.

Use aggressive pricing and polished listings to appear more attractive than legitimate operators.

The result is that a tourist believes they are dealing with a serious, vetted company, when in reality, they are handing money and personal safety over to someone who has no legal responsibility and no insurance to protect them.

Legal Action: Professionals Versus Illegal Operators

Professional operators have not remained passive in the face of this phenomenon. According to your statement, more than 30 legal complaints have been filed against individuals who:

Have no legal status as licensed transport providers or travel agents.

Impersonate a tourist transport company or a travel agency.

Generate revenues that “exceed imagination” by operating completely outside the legal and tax framework.

Professionals are now:

Waiting for the decisions of the courts.

Waiting for the outcome of meetings with the security authorities, particularly regarding enforcement around the Jemaa el-Fnaa area.

These actions show that this is not a minor dispute between competitors, but a structural fight for the rule of law, passenger safety, and fair competition in the tourism sector.

The Morning “Black Market” Around Jemaa el-Fnaa

One of the most alarming aspects of this situation is what happens daily between 06:00 and 09:00 in the vicinity of Jemaa el-Fnaa. During these early hours, the area effectively turns into an open black market for illegal tourist transport.

The practices reported include:

Random, chaotic parking by unlicensed vehicles waiting for tourists.

Transport of tourists on motorcycles, without appropriate insurance, safety equipment, or authorization.

Use of self-drive rental cars to carry tourists, which is strictly outside the legal framework of car rental contracts and transport regulations.

Cash deals and off-the-books transactions, with no invoices, no tax declarations, and no financial transparency.

Unlicensed guiding, where individuals accompany tourists without any official guide license or training.

Vehicles from outside the city, using “manifests” as a pretext to gather unrelated individuals in the same vehicle, without the legally responsible group leader being present.

From the tourist’s perspective, this often looks like a normal pickup: a smiling driver, a WhatsApp confirmation, and a car waiting. But in reality, they are stepping into a gray zone where insurance coverage, legal responsibility, and safety standards are either extremely weak or entirely absent.

The Bitter Paradox: Punishing the Legal, Ignoring the Illegal

Perhaps the most painful paradox for professionals is what happens after this chaotic period. Once the illegal operators have completed their pickups and disappeared with their groups, enforcement suddenly becomes strict — but primarily against the legal operators.

Reportedly:

Legal tourist transport vehicles are subjected to strict “no stopping, no parking” rules in the very same areas that were moments earlier an open market for illegal pickups.

Fines and penalties are issued to licensed drivers who attempt to operate within the law and respect prescribed routes and stops.

This sends the worst possible signal:

To illegal operators: “If you come early and work in the shadows, you can operate freely.”

To legal professionals: “Your compliance with the law does not protect you; you may even be penalized more.”

To tourists: “The system is confusing and inconsistent; you cannot easily tell who is safe and who is not.”

For a city that lives from tourism, such a paradox undermines trust, safety, and the long-term sustainability of the sector.

Structural Risks for Tourists

While some tourists may feel that “a cheap tour is a good deal,” the hidden risks are significant:

No insurance coverage
In case of an accident or injury, an unlicensed operator may not have valid passenger insurance. The tourist may find that there is no one legally responsible to cover medical costs or damages.

No legal recourse
With fake company names and no official registration, it becomes almost impossible to pursue legal action or obtain compensation.

Safety and maintenance standards
Illegal operators are not subject to the technical inspections, professional training, and safety protocols required from licensed transport companies and agencies.

Reputational damage to the destination
Each bad experience shared on social media or review platforms contributes to a negative image of Marrakech and Morocco, even though the real problem is a minority operating outside the law.

Why Platforms Must Be Part of the Solution

Online platforms like GetYourGuide cannot simply claim to be “neutral intermediaries” when they actively promote, rank, and profit from these operators. A responsible approach would include:

Strict verification of the legal status of any partner offering transport or tours (licenses, insurance, commercial registration, tax number).

Regular audits and immediate suspension of any listing linked to fake companies or non-compliant operators.

Clear communication to customers about the legal status of each provider, including license numbers and the type of insurance.

Collaboration with local authorities and professional associations to share information and remove high-risk operators.

Without these measures, the platform becomes an indirect contributor to the problem, even if that is not its intention.

Recommendations for Authorities

To restore order and protect both tourists and legitimate professionals, local authorities and law enforcement bodies could:

Intensify early-morning controls
Target specifically the 06:00–09:00 window around Jemaa el-Fnaa and similar hotspots where illegal pickups occur.

Distinguish clearly between legal and illegal operators
Use visible permits, QR codes, or digital registries that allow quick verification during roadside checks.

Coordinate with platforms
Request cooperation from booking platforms to share information on listed operators and take joint action against repeated offenders.

Sanction fake companies and impostors
Apply firm legal penalties against those who impersonate licensed professionals or operate under false corporate identities.

Protect legal operators from unfair treatment
Ensure that enforcement focuses on illegal practices, not on punishing those who already comply with a demanding regulatory framework.

Advice for Tourists Booking Tours in Marrakech

For visitors who may read or receive this article, some practical advice can reduce their risk:

Verify the company’s legal status
Ask for the transport license number, the tourism transport permit, or the travel agency registration. A serious operator will share this without hesitation.

Be cautious of “too good to be true” prices
Very low prices often mean that safety, insurance, or legal compliance are being sacrificed.

Check contact details beyond the platform
Look for a real website, a physical address, and a company name that appears in official registries (not only on booking portals).

Avoid cash-only deals without receipts
Always request a receipt or booking confirmation with the full legal name of the company, date, and service description.

Observe the vehicle and the driver
Check if the vehicle has a professional transport plate or visible tourist transport markings, and if the driver behaves like a trained professional rather than an informal taxi.

Advice for Local Professionals

For legitimate operators and professionals like you, there are strategic steps that can strengthen your position:

Document every incident
Collect evidence (photos, videos, licence plates, screenshots of listings) and attach them to your legal complaints.

Communicate collectively
Work through professional associations or unions to speak with one voice in front of authorities and platforms.

Educate your customers
Use your website, social media, and direct communication to explain why booking with a licensed operator is safer, even if the price is a bit higher.

Engage with the media responsibly
Share documented cases with local or international media to raise awareness, but always respect legal confidentiality while the cases are in court.

Propose concrete solutions
When you meet authorities, present practical recommendations (badges, QR codes, specific pickup zones, joint control operations) instead of only highlighting problems.

My previous trip to Marrakech was all about history and landmarks.
I visited most of the main sights and finally felt like I knew the city up close.

This spring break, I want something different.
I’m an introvert, I get drained quickly in busy souks, and I absolutely love nature.

So I designed a plan that stays true to Marrakech’s character, but gives me space to breathe: gardens, rooftops, slow walks, and simple food nearby.

I planned 3 short days focused on what I truly enjoy: calm walking, local food, and time for photos and reflection.

Here’s my route – you can copy it or adjust it to your own taste.

Day 1 – Arrival, Arsat Moulay Abdel Salam

I’ll arrive in Marrakech around 12 PM, go straight to my hostel (Hostel Laksour), take a hot shower, and rest from the trip. No rushing, no “drop your bags and run”.

After about two hours, I’ll head out for lunch at Maison Reine Mediterranean Rooftop Restaurant & Concept Store.

It’s quiet, close to the riad, and has a simple menu.

I’m planning to try the pasticcio pie with iced tea just to see how it tastes in Marrakech.

A couple of hours later, I’ll walk to Arsat Moulay Abdel Salam.

Last time I tried to visit, it was closed and I arrived too late. This time I want to take my time and really explore it. It looks big, and that’s exactly the spirit of this trip:

relaxation, not fear of missing out.

I’ll wander slowly, sit if I find a nice bench, maybe take a few photos and just let the place sink in.

Evening: I’ll spend the night around Jemaa el‑Fnaa, have a light dinner there, and then head back to the riad before the noise becomes too much.

Morning:

I’ll book a trip to Anima Garden, one of the most imaginative green spaces around Marrakech. The ticket costs me 6€ as a local, and about 14€ for tourists, with 6€ per child. There’s a free shuttle bus that runs:

Morning: leaves from the Koutoubia parking at 9:30 AM and comes back around 1:00 PM.

Afternoon: leaves at 2:30 PM and returns at 5:30 PM.

I’ll choose the time that feels right for my energy that day – the goal is calm, not a checklist. I know I’ll mostly walk in silence, enjoy the art and plants, and take photos whenever something catches my eye.

Anima Garden Marrakech — When a Garden Becomes an Open-Air Museum

Around 2 PM:

I’ll be back in the medina and ready for lunch at Café des Épices. Their famous Paris–Marrakech Burger mixes a classic burger with local flavours: smoked eggplant, Moroccan spices, homemade fries – exactly the kind of fusion I like to try once per trip.

I also want to try their cinnamon and ginger tea.

PS: I’m not going for “just mint tea” here; I’d rather order their herbal blends that smell like the spice square all around you.

I’ll rest in the café for a while, watch people move through the square, then head out again.

To keep it real:

I’ll take bus L12 near Koutoubia to move towards my next stop.

As a local, taxis often ignore me; if you’re a foreign visitor, you can easily hail a taxi instead.

Majorelle Garden:

From there, I’ll go straight to Majorelle Garden.
My plan is simple:

Walk slowly.

Take photos.

Enjoy the famous Majorelle blue and the rare plants collected from around the world.

I want to leave before sunset, return to the riad, and rest. If I still have energy, I might walk again through Jemaa el‑Fnaa in the evening – completely optional.

PS: Majorelle tickets are now 170 DH for adults and 95 DH for children over 10, and they are online only, so you have to book your time slot in advance.

Day 3 – The Secret Garden & Menara Gardens

The third day is the most “green” one.

First stop: The Secret Garden, just 5 minutes’ walk from Dar el‑Bacha – and also about 5 minutes from where I’m staying.

For me, it’s the perfect alternative to crowded Majorelle: same garden feeling, fewer tour buses.

I’ll take my time there, sit somewhere quiet, and read a book about spirituality. I’m thinking of bringing “The Celestine Prophecy” – I love this book, and it fits perfectly with the atmosphere of hidden gardens and inner reflection.

After that, I’ll head to Nomad, near Café des Épices.
This time I don’t want the “safe” choice:

I’ll skip the usual dishes and go straight for fish of the day – covered with almond pesto and lemon.
They say one bite can take you from Marrakech to the coast of Essaouira.

If I can’t decide on a drink, I’ll order the tasting board, so I can try several juices in one sitting – like drinking all the Moroccan orchards in one go.

Le Jardin Secret Marrakech — The Hidden Garden That Hides a View You’ll Never Forget

Afternoon (~4 PM):

I’ll be at Menara Gardens. It’s a huge, open space with water, trees, sky, and distant Atlas views – a must‑add for any “green Marrakech” itinerary.

I’ll walk as much as I feel like, then head back to the riad.

For my last evening, I’ll keep it simple: light dinner in Jemaa el‑Fnaa, say goodbye to the square, and sleep early.

About Restaurants

For authentic Moroccan food with real home cooking taste, look for simple spots like Chez Lamine for argan oil olives or other traditional gems.

But watch out for the “double‑price restaurants” like L’Adresse – they’re often clustered together near the square, serving the exact same food as the cheaper ones next door.

The only difference? A view of the square, which they use as an excuse to charge double.

The restaurants I mentioned earlier (Nomad, Café des Épices, Maison Reine) are great, but they’re expensive and don’t always give you traditional dishes with that genuine home flavour.

PS: If you want real Moroccan cooking at fair prices, skip the “view tax” and head to the unpretentious spots where locals eat.

Map of 3 Green Days in Marrakech (Just tap to explore)

Why this plan works for me?

This 3‑day route is short and practical. It focuses exactly on what I love:

Slow walking instead of racing from sight to sight.

Nearby food instead of long taxi rides just to eat.

Gardens, terraces and open spaces where an introvert can breathe.

Enough structure so I don’t waste time, but enough freedom to sit, read, and just look around.

There is no rushing, no long transfers, and no pressure to “do everything”.
It’s made for someone who wants to rediscover Marrakech in green – with nature, light, and quiet moments between all the noise.

I already have a Google Maps layer with all these spots pinned.

And if this is your first time in Marrakech, don’t let scammers or confusion ruin it. Download my Quick Guide (10 pages) – it’ll easily save you more than 100 USD and a lot of mental energy.

That’s my plan.
If it resonates with you, maybe it can be your plan too.

If you only follow generic “Top 10 Things to Do” lists, you’ll end up exhausted, overcharged, and wondering why everyone on Instagram looks happier than you.

This guide is different. These are the things I’ve learned from living and walking in Marrakech — the small details that can make your trip either unforgettable… or just uncomfortable.

Your taxi will not drop you at your riad door

The old town (the medina) is basically car‑free: narrow alleys, scooters, carts and people everywhere. Taxis can only go as far as the main streets or big squares.

That means:

Your taxi will stop at a main road (like near Jemaa el‑Fnaa), and from there you walk with your luggage through the alleys.

Always message your riad before you arrive and ask for a meeting point on the main street and, if possible, someone to walk you in.

The sooner you accept that walking inside the medina is non‑negotiable, the more you’ll enjoy it.

Marrakech Made Easy: Save $100+ on your Marrakech trip!

Don’t rely on one pair of Birkenstocks

The medina ground is not friendly: dust, cobblestones, bumps, puddles near hammams and markets, and the occasional mysterious liquid.

Bring at least one closed, comfortable pair of shoes or a sturdy sandal with a back strap (not flip‑flops).

If you love your Birkenstocks, keep them for short strolls or hanging around the riad — not for a full day weaving through the souks.

You’ll easily walk 8–10 km a day without noticing. In Marrakech, your shoes matter more than your outfit.

Don’t chase your “dream restaurant” on night one

Trying to find the perfect rooftop on your first evening usually means:

A long walk while you’re tired and hungry, dodging scooters and crowds.

Discovering it’s fully booked or way above your budget.

My rule:

On the first night, eat at the nearest decent place to your riad, even if it isn’t Instagram‑famous. Your goal is to land gently, not to tick off a bucket‑list restaurant.

Once you’ve rested and understood your neighbourhood, then pick one special restaurant or rooftop and walk there on another night.

Remember my quick‑guide motto: “Chase everything, you’ll end up with nothing”

Plan one “just walking” day in the medina

The medina isn’t only a way to get from point A to B – it is the experience.

Give yourself one slow day like this:

Morning: wander through the alleys with no big agenda except looking, listening, and taking photos.

Late morning: sit in a café, order a mint tea or coffee, and literally do nothing except people‑watch.

Afternoon: choose one sight only (a palace, a garden, or a small museum), visit it calmly, then stroll back to your riad.

The more you try to cram 10 attractions into one day, the faster Marrakech turns from magical to exhausting.

Don’t skip the traditional hammam (it’s not a luxury spa)

One of the most “Marrakech” things you can do is also one of the cheapest.

A traditional Moroccan hammam is simple:

You cover your body with black soap.

Sit in hot steam.

Then scrub with a rough glove until dead skin rolls off like little grey noodles.

That’s it. No candles, no rose petals. Just clean, heavy relaxation for about a dollar and a half in local hammams.

We do this weekly in winter, and many locals are genuinely addicted to how light they feel afterward. Don’t miss it — just be ready for a real, local experience, not a polished spa brochure.

Moroccan Hammam for Beginners: Step-by-Step Guide (From a Local)

Know where your money goes in Jemaa el‑Fnaa

Jemaa el‑Fnaa is both dazzling and a masterclass in “legal robbery”.

Many people there make their living from tourists and will happily test how high you’re willing to go.

For souvenirs, taxis, henna, photos with monkeys/snakes, or any “little service”:

Never accept a price before you hear it clearly.

As a rule of thumb, try not to pay more than 70% of the first price — and even that might still be generous.

Enjoy the square, take it as a show, but keep your wallet and your common sense close.

Street food is not always as “romantic” as blogs say

I don’t fully agree with the typical “You must try all the street food in Jemaa el‑Fnaa, it’s amazing!” narrative.

Some stalls are good, others are… just okay, and hygiene can be questionable.

If you want to really taste how good Moroccan food is, look for restaurants with excellent reviews, not just the ones shouting the loudest.

Moroccan cuisine is fantastic. Give it a fair chance in places that actually care about flavour and cleanliness.

Remember: in Marrakech, cash is king

If you’re used to paying by card for everything, forget it.

Most Moroccans use their bank cards just to withdraw cash.

In souks, taxis, small cafés and many riads, cash is still the main player.

Always keep enough cash on you, especially small bills and coins, to avoid awkward situations — or being forced to buy “something extra” because “they don’t have change”.

Don’t buy from the first shop (especially if you look very touristy)

Any shop that spots you as a tourist — blond, blue‑eyed, or just clearly not local — will often switch straight into hustle mode.

A few truths most guides don’t tell you:

Many “what to buy in Marrakech (with prices)” articles use inflated numbers.

Moroccans rarely buy decorative tagines or tourist crafts for their own homes, so logically, prices should be low, not luxury‑level.

My advice:

Use the first walk in the souk just to look, not to buy.

Don’t accept the first price, and don’t be shy to walk away.

As a rule, aim for 30–40% of the first offer and see where you land.

If you want a calmer experience for bigger items (carpets, pottery, textiles), you can also look for government‑linked artisan centres like (ensemble artisanal) where prices are fixed and haggling is minimal.

The best part of Marrakech is often away from the big sights

Everyone knows the main names: Jemaa el‑Fnaa, Koutoubia, Bahia Palace…

But the real magic is often here:

Quiet side alleys where you suddenly find peace after the chaos.

Small streets that smell of rosewater or spices outside tiny shops.

Simple corners where kids play football and neighbours chat.

Make time to get “lost on purpose” in the medina — while still keeping Google Maps in your pocket for when you want to go back.

And don’t forget the areas outside the old walls: Majorelle Garden, the palm groves, the Atlas foothills, nearby resorts… Marrakech isn’t only a postcard of “old Morocco”; it’s a full, living city.

Respect the red lines: mosques and religious sites

One important cultural point:

In Morocco, non‑Muslims are not allowed inside mosques and religious sanctuaries, including famous ones like Koutoubia.

So don’t build your itinerary around “visiting the inside” of mosques.
Enjoy their architecture from the outside, take your photos, and avoid awkward moments at the door.

The exception, if you pass through Casablanca, is Hassan II Mosque — that one offers guided visits.

Take weather warnings seriously

Summer in Marrakech is brutal — even for locals with “brown skin and experience”. Temperatures can feel like an oven, and some visitors still decide to take sand baths in the desert in August.

If you hate extreme heat:

Avoid peak summer or at least avoid planning intense walking days and long desert trips at that time.

Spring and autumn are much kinder on your body and your mood.

Sometimes the best “tip” is simply: choose your dates wisely.

Final thought: Marrakech rewards the curious wanderer, not the checklist hunter

If you remember one thing from all this, let it be this:

Pack light. Wear real shoes. Keep some cash. Say no when the price feels wrong.
Give yourself time to walk slowly, get lost a little, and then find your favourite corner.

Do that, and Marrakech stops being a stressful maze and becomes what it truly is:
a loud, beautiful, perfectly imperfect city that you’ll remember long after your plane takes off.

Marrakech has a reputation: loud, colourful, chaotic, always “on”.
For an introvert, that can sound more like a threat than a holiday.

But here’s the secret: if you choose the right season, right base, and right rhythm, Marrakech turns from sensory overload into a warm, slow-breathing city where you can recharge, think, and quietly fall in love with Morocco.

This is your introvert‑friendly guide to the Red City – written by someone who loves the atmosphere, the desert light and the spring weather, but avoids labyrinth cities like Fes and big “cold” urban vibes like Casablanca, Tangier or Tetouan.

When to Visit: Give Your Nervous System a Chance

Introverts don’t only choose destinations; we choose timing.

Best season: Spring (March–May)
Daytime temperatures usually sit in the low‑ to mid‑20s °C, with plenty of sun and far less heat stress than summer.

Best times of day:

Early morning for soft light and empty streets.

Late afternoon / golden hour for walks when the sun calms down.

Keep the middle of the day for shade, naps, or reading in your riad.

Think of it as shifting the city into “quiet mode” simply by choosing your hours wisely.

Your Riad: Build a Private World Inside the Medina

For an introvert, the riad is not just accommodation; it’s your safe base.

Traditional riads are built around an inner courtyard with plants, fountain, and often a small plunge pool – a calm micro‑universe behind one simple wooden door.

When you choose, look for:

Few rooms, not many: 5–12 rooms means fewer strangers and less buzz.

Courtyard or roof terrace: somewhere you can sit with a book and tea without needing to interact.

Attentive but discreet staff: reviews that mention “felt like home” or “they knew when to give us space” are gold.

Once you arrive, let your days orbit around this base:

Breakfast with birds and sunlight instead of in a crowded buffet.

A couple of quiet hours between outings to reset your social battery.

Evenings on the roof under the sky instead of hunting for loud bars.

If your budget allows, paying more for a calm, beautiful riad is one of the best introvert investments you can make in Marrakech.

Experience Marrakech from Above, Not Inside the Chaos

You don’t have to stand in the middle of Jemaa el‑Fnaa to “really” see Marrakech.

A smarter introvert move is:

Go to Jemaa el‑Fnaa in late afternoon.

Walk straight up to a rooftop café overlooking the square.

Order mint tea, choose a corner table, and watch the show from above.

From there, you still see:

snake charmers, food stalls lighting up, the Koutoubia minaret at sunset – but you keep your body out of the crush, the smoke, and the constant “Come look, my friend!”.

If you do want to walk through the square, do it with a clear exit plan: one slow loop, then back to your riad or rooftop.

10 Historical Places in Marrakech That Still Give Me Goosebumps (With a Map)

Quiet Places in the City: Gardens, Museums, and Hidden Cafés

Introverts need pockets of silence to stay sane. Marrakech actually has several, if you know where to look.

Calm Sights

Le Jardin Secret – a restored garden right inside the medina, with shady paths and a rooftop café; go early to enjoy it before tour groups arrive.

Smaller museums and palaces – places like the Marrakech Museum, the El Badi Palace ruins, or less‑famous corners of the medina are easier to enjoy slowly than the most hyped spots.

Jardin Majorelle – colourful and beautiful, but best very early or very late; mid‑day is pure crowd.

How to Spend One Day in Marrakech Without Missing a Thing (With a Map)

Introvert‑Friendly Cafés

Look for cafés with:

Courtyards full of plants,

Rooftop terraces with separate corners,

Or riad‑style spaces where you’re more guest than “table to turn”.

Guides to hidden rooftop or courtyard cafés in Marrakech consistently highlight spots where you can linger over a drink and nobody rushes you.

Plan your day around one sight + one café, not ten attractions.

Nature Without Group Tours: Agafay instead of Ouzoud and Ourika

If group buses and chatty guides drain you, you can still get your nature fix – just avoid the classic mass day trips.

Skip (for now):

Big group tours to Ouzoud waterfalls or Ourika Valley, full of stops, speeches, and forced “fun”.

Instead, consider:

Agafay Desert (1 night)
A stony, moon‑like desert 30–45 minutes from Marrakech, with wide horizons and almost zero light pollution.

Go for a small camp with fewer tents.

Choose an option focused on sunset + dinner + stargazing, not quads and loud music.

Ideal introvert evening = fire, sky full of stars, soft live music at a distance, then silence.

This gives you the “desert experience” without a long drive or constant social interaction.

11 Best Things to Do in Marrakech (That Tourists Miss)

Hammam, Massage, and Hijama (Cupping): Deep Rest, Minimal Talking

Traditional hammams can be overwhelming if you go to the most local, crowded ones at peak time – but they can also be an introvert’s best friend.

To keep them comfortable:

Book a private or semi‑private hammam session in a small spa rather than a huge public bath.

Choose off‑peak hours (late morning or mid‑afternoon).

Don’t worry about talking: therapists in good hammams are used to working mostly in silence.

A typical relaxing combo:

Warm steam to soften muscles.

Black soap + scrub to literally “shed” tension.

Oil massage in a dim, quiet room.

You come out lighter, calmer, and more grounded – without needing to entertain anyone.

For hijama (Cupping) or more therapeutic treatments, look for a recommended clinic and book a slot where you won’t be rushed; make it part of a slow day with nothing heavy planned afterwards.

Moroccan Hammam for Beginners: Step-by-Step Guide (From a Local)

Gentle Adventure: Yes to Paragliding, No to Crowds

Being introvert doesn’t mean you’re boring; it just means you like intensity without noise.

Paragliding near Marrakech
Many operators offer tandem flights over valleys or desert landscapes. Once you’re in the air, it’s just wind, view, and adrenaline – no group performance needed.

Small live‑music evenings
Look for intimate venues or riad events with Gnawa, oud, or acoustic sets:

Limited seats,

Soft lights,

People mostly listening, not shouting over the music.

These are experiences you feel deeply, but recover from easily.

A Sample 1‑Day Introvert Itinerary in Marrakech

Here’s how a day can look when you design it around energy, not FOMO:

Morning

Slow breakfast in your riad.

1 hour of reading, journaling, or just watching the light in the courtyard.

Late Morning

Short walk to one calm sight (for example, Le Jardin Secret or a small museum).

60–90 minutes there, then straight to a nearby courtyard café.

Afternoon

Back to your riad for a nap or screen‑free rest.

Booked hammam + massage session in a quiet spa.

Late Afternoon / Sunset

Rooftop drink with a view of the medina or Koutoubia.

Optional short wander through less busy streets as the air cools down.

Why Marrakech Can Work Surprisingly Well for Introverts

Marrakech looks chaotic on Instagram, but underneath the noise it actually has everything an introvert needs:

Closed, quiet bases – riads that shut out the city the moment the door closes.

Natural “escape hatches” – gardens, rooftop cafés, small museums, where sitting alone is normal, not weird.

True silence within reach – the Agafay desert, where the sky and horizon do all the talking for you.

If you build your trip around calm spaces, off‑peak hours, and one or two carefully chosen adventures, Marrakech doesn’t have to be a sensory assault.

It can be exactly what an introvert secretly wants:
warmth, beauty, stories to remember – and enough quiet to actually feel them.
